On June 5, 2007, Gamma Gamma Omega members and other North Carolina members of Alpha Kappa Alpha participated in AKA Day at the Capitol. The 2007-2008 legislative focus is on childcare, economics, education, health and hunger. The day began with greeting from special guest and elected officials. Lt. Governor Beverly Perdue spoke about the legislative agenda and asked sorors to particpate in the legislative process and get involved in issues that affect women. Participants also heard from panels on preserving our communities, education in North Carolina, and Political Empowerment. Our very own Mayor Terry Bellamy spoke on the Empowerment panel about impediments to attaining political office, provided personal experiences regarding her campaign for City Commission and Mayor, and charged attendees to get involved in changing our communities by attending forums and meetings.
A press conference was held by Senator Katie Dorsett ( a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.) regarding a bill introduced to address health education (SB-260). The bill is an act to ensure educational materials are provided so taht schools provide information to parents and guardians concerning cervical cancer, cerivcal dysplasia, human pappillomavirus, and the vaccines available to prevent these diseases (see pictures of press conference below).
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated will focus on key issues facing the African American Communtiy, such as world hunger, mental health, AIDs, domestic violence, sickle cell anemia, diabetes, education, cardiovascular disease, and the enviroment. |
